Mission and Values

Our Mission

Congregation Agudas Achim is a welcoming and inclusive Jewish community. We provide a space where we can explore our Jewish culture and religious practice together—learning from each other, supporting one another and developing connections to each other. We are a member-led Reconstructionist synagogue, supported and guided by our rabbi, and a
hub for Jewish living. We embrace interfaith families, marginalized Jews, and others who wish to call Agudas Achim their Jewish home.

Our Values

Our spiritual connections bring us together:

Our members take many paths to a meaningful spiritual connection with Judaism. As a Reconstructionist congregation, we believe in making traditional Jewish practice and spirituality more relevant and impactful on our daily lives. At the same time, being Jewish is as much of a cultural identity as it is a religious affiliation. Our goal is to help every member find how to make Judaism feel right for them in the world we live in today.

Our diversity is our strength:

We believe that we are stronger together than we are alone. We’re a diverse group, with a wide range of viewpoints and backgrounds. We stay together by agreeing that regardless of our differences, everyone is always treated with courtesy and respect. If you are part of an interfaith home, the LGBTQIA+ community or another marginalized group, we welcome you with open arms.

Creating a strong community:

Our close-knit community is led by its members, who participate collectively in making important decisions. Volunteers strengthen our congregation by organizing many spiritual and secular events throughout the year.  Our congregation is like a family that supports you through hard times and celebrates your special moments.

Every member a learner, every learner a teacher:

We have an obligation to share what we know, across generations and through the diversity of our individual experiences. We endeavor to provide opportunities to learn about Jewish practice and culture through our Hebrew School programs, Torah study and adult learning opportunities.

Tikkun olam (Actively repairing the world):

Tikkun olam is an ideal, but it won’t happen without us. We strive to make a difference in the world. Our work should display empathy and love, inspire compassion, and support social equality. When we see injustice, it is our responsibility to call it out and respond.
