SUMMARY:Adult Education in Person with Rabbi Alex
DESCRIPTION:Every Breath\, Words Aflame: Reconstructionist Thought Through
Liturgy\n\nIn 1945\, Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan published the first Reconstruct
ionist siddur–the Jewish prayer book that reflected the values and ideal
s of Reconstructionist thought. The changes and ideas in the siddur were s
o radical that a group of over 200 Orthodox rabbis gathered in New York to
come up with a response. At this gathering\, some rabbis burned the siddu
r\, calling it heretical and placed Kaplan under cherem–excommunicating
him from Judaism for “'atheism\, heresy and disbelief in the basic tenet
s of Judaism.'” Over seventy-five years later\, the siddur has evolved a
nd had a tremendous influence on prayer books in all streams of Judaism.\n
\nIn this class\, we will explore the Reconstructionist siddur with the du
al aims of becoming more familiar with Jewish liturgy to enhance our praye
r lives\, and also to have a deeper understanding of Reconstructionist tho
ught and practice\, with an eye to what made it seem so radical in 1945. N
o previous knowledge required\, just curiosity and an open mind.\n\nClass
will meet at CAA\, 1:00-2:30 PM on the following dates:\n\nJanuary 23\n\nJ
 anuary 30\n\nFebruary 27\n\nMarch 6\n\nMarch 27\n\nApril 10
